Real Madrid is one of the best known football clubs in the World. Moreover, on January 12th 1998, FIFA bestowed the title of "Team of the Century" to Real Madrid. Real Madrid is not the oldest football club in the World, not even in Spain (that privilege goes to Recreativo de Huelva) and it hasn't got the largest stadium, or the biggest number of season ticket holders. But wherever you go, when the name Real Madrid is mentioned, no person who has ever heard of football can fail to have heard of the club. Whether it's because of the likes of Di Stéfano and Puskas, who played in Real's all-conquering team in the 1950s, or Butragueño, Míchel and Hugo Sánchez in the 1980s, or even some of today's stars, such as Raúl, Ronaldo, Zidane, Figo, Beckham, Salgado, Casillas or Roberto Carlos, there is no doubting its enduring impression on the footballing world.

But it is not just players, both past and present that make Real Madrid the great institution it is. Success at home and abroad, and with it, an impressive trophy cabinet are the hallmark of the club. Real Madrid has won more editions of Europe's premier club competition, the European Cup, than any other team. And in the league, nobody comes even close. Almost all of this success can be traced back to the vision of one man.

In 1943, Santiago Bernabéu became the tenth president of Real Madrid and retained that post until 1975. In that time, the club won 6 European Cups, 1 Intercontinental Cup, 16 league titles and 6 Spanish Cups. It was his drive to make Real Madrid the best team in the World, that led him to pursue the best players and coaches to share his vision. He also wanted a stadium worthy of such a team, and it celebrated the 50th anniversary of its inauguration on December 14th 1997.

The list below show the match reports and line-ups for the finals, plus a look back (in Spanish) from each of them from the only player ever to have won 6 European Cups, Paco Gento

Real Madrid was formed 6th March 1902, and the title Real (Real is Spanish for Royal) was bestowed upon the club by King Alfonso XIII in 1920.

Real Madrid play at the world famous Bernabeu stadium, named after Santiago Bernabeu who became club president in 1943 and funded the club's subsequent domination of Spanish football.

Bernabeu Stadium has a capacity of around 87 000 (76 000 spectators, all seated for European games).

Since 1931, Real Madrid have won the Spanish League championship an incredible 29 times(25 times after WWII). The most recent title came in 2002/2003

Since 1928, Real Madrid have been runners-up to the Spanish title 15 times.

In February 1957, the club began an unbeaten run at home that lasted an astounding 114 games and ended eight years later in March 1965.

Between 1956 and 1960, Real Madrid won the first five European Cups. They won it again in 1966, and finally again after 32 years in 1998 with another 2 in 2000 and in their centenary year 2002.

The team that dominated Spain and Europe in the 50's have to go into history books as the most famous and the best side ever to play, featuring legends as Alfredo di Stefano, Gento and Ferenc Puskas, by many considered better players than Pele ever was.

A sign of how good Real Madrid was and how enjoyable they must have been to watch even for the opposite sides fans was clearly shown in the 1960 European Cup Final were Real Madrid beat Eintracht Frankfurt 7-3, the crowd was so impressed that they refused to leave the ground until the Real Madrid team had performed a lap of honour.

The following year the team became the inaugural World Club champions, when they once again in an impressing performance beat their South American champions Penarol 5-1.

Real Madrid have had many famous and great players wearing its jersey, names such as Santiago Bernabeu (1911-1927), Ricardo Zamora (1930-36), Alfredo Di Stefano (1953-1964), Paco Gento (1953-1971), Raymond Kopa (1956-59), Ferenc Puskas (1958-67), Gunter Netzer (1973-76), Paul Breitner (1974-1977), Jose Antonio Camacho (1973-1989), Emilio Butragueno (1983-1995), Hugo Sanchez (1985-1992).

As one of the world's most famous clubs, Real have a number of illustrious fans and they don't come much bigger than Spain's current sovereign King Juan Carlos and his wife. Julio Iglesias is another famous person that are a fan of the club as well, he even was offered a contract to become goalkeeper at the club, but turned it down and pursued a more different public scene, surely something the spanish speaking women and more are greatful for. Recently Ian Thorpe have shown his admiration to the club, and Spanish golfer Garcia has good taste as well and in October also became a fully fledged member of Real Madrid.

In the season 1999/2000 Real performed badly in Spain, getting only 5th in the Primera and losing to Espanyol in the Semi finals of the Copa del Rey. However Real Madrid managed to impress in the Champions League once again by winning their 8 title in the most prestigious club tournament, and winning the trophy for the second time in 3 years. Casillas, Salgado and Redondo were the most prolific players in the 1999/2000 season for Real Madrid, with Redondo as the player of the season Casillas as youngster of the season and Salgado the best buy, along with Macca who played brilliant in the last part of the season. Redondo also was awarded as the best player in the Champions League 1999/2000 and awarded the EFE award as the best south american player in Spain in the 90s, beating players such as Maradona, Ronaldo, Rivaldo.

Season 2000/2001 finally saw Real Madrid lift the Primera title again, but failed miserably in the Spanish Cup with an exit that has been measured as one of the most humiliating defeats ever (loss to Toledo), and an Semi-final exit in Champions League to Bayern Munchen.

Season 2001/2002 the year of the Centenary celebration 100 year of greatness!! Real Madrid players would receive a 35 million US dollar bonus if they would manage to win the CL, La Liga and Copa del Rey. On the day of the 100th birthday (and mine) 6th of March, the Real Madrid players could watch that bonus fly away as they lost 2 - 1 at home to Deportivo La Coruna in the final (Raul scoring for Real Madrid).

Season 2002/2003 This indeed was the start of the so called Galactic Real Madrid when Ronaldo joined in. Real Madrid were knocked out in the Champions League by Juventus in the semifinals, this indeed might have been a good reason as to why Real Madrid fired Del Bosque. Real Madrid CF didn't win the Champions League as it was expected. 1998-2000-2002-------2004 is the year in which Real Madrid might get its 4th Champions League title according to history. Real Madrid won its 29th title thanks to a phenomenal Ronaldo by scoring 2 goals. The season 2004 is going to be even better with the new signing of David Beckham, the era has begun, the era of the GALACTICS.

With Real Madrid playing extremely poor away in La Liga, Real Madrid had put themselves in a difficult spot for the La Liga title, which they in the end lost to Valencia. But Real Madrid managed to win the Champions League trophy last year to have something to celebrate 100 years of greatness. The players that performed the best for Real Madrid last season were Zidane (at times proving that $66 million isen't that much after all), Solari (along with Zidane the player with most technique at the club and very important in the attacking build up, Salgado (questioning if he really is the best right wingback in the world, low point this season was not being called up by Camacho to Spain's world cup squad) and Pavon for being youth revelation of the year.

Other Historical moments

Of the players playing today Guti put himself into the Real Madrid history books by scoring the 500th goal in the European Cup at Santiago Bernabeu on the 25 October 2000 against Sporting Lisbon in a 4 - 0 win. The 500th goal came in Real Madrid's 219th match in the European Cup. The first goal in the European Cup for Real Madrid was scored in 1955 by Miguel Munoz.
